Japanese company sues Taiwan manufacturer products for patent infringement of LED light strips

On March 5, 2025, the Supreme Court ruled to dismiss the appeal. Unless the appellant Yi-Chuan Precision files for a retrial, the amount of compensation and interest exceeding 100 million yen and tens of millions of New Taiwan dollars can be considered certain.

Taiwan's well-known computer giant Compal Computer Industrial Co., Ltd. purchased 32-inch light bars (hereinafter referred to as the disputed light bars) equipped with LEDs manufactured by Everlight Electronics Co., Ltd. from Yi-Chuan Precision for use in the production of television models 32S8 and 32S10 (hereinafter referred to as the disputed televisions), and then sold the finished disputed televisions to the outsider, Japanese company Toshiba Visual Solutions Corporation (hereinafter referred to as TVS).

After TVS  sold the finished disputed televisions in Japan, it was sued by a foreign company, Nichia Chemical Corporation (hereinafter referred to as Nichia), which accused the LED used in the disputed television and its manufacturing method of infringing Nichia's Japanese patent rights.

It filed a patent infringement injunction and other lawsuits against TVS in Japan. The Japanese court ruled that TVS should compensate Nichia with 132,000,000 yen and interest calculated at an annual interest rate of 5% from August 29, 2017, to the date of repayment (hereinafter referred to as the disputed Japanese lawsuit). The case was finalized on September 21, 2021.
